This mid-19th-century French reclining armchair belongs to the 19th century and is constructed from mahogany, leather, and brass. The wood shows a rich warm brown tone with distinct flame grain patterns, complemented by dark brown button-backed leather upholstery and rows of polished brass studding. Notable elements include a shaped and carved headrest with decorative shell cresting, expansive wingback supports, scrolled arms with applied padded rests, and four scrolled wooden legs fitted with modern rubber stoppers. A diamond-shaped inlay adorns the side rail below the arm, and the pull-out footrest extends from beneath the seat. Practical dimensions measure 132 cm high, 72.3 cm wide, and 98 cm deep, extending to a full length of 179 cm. Suitable for placement in a gentleman's library, a study, or a traditional living room, this reclining armchair provides an imposing seating option. The deep button tufting and adjustable reclining mechanism offer functional comfort, while the substantial wooden frame anchors the room. The piece displays original patina, with minor surface marks on the timber, minor restoration to the headrest, and the leather missing a few buttons while remaining in good condition for its age.

Developed during the mid-19th century, these chairs incorporated integrated metal ratchets and hinges within solid timber frames, allowing the backrest to adjust into multiple positions for reading or relaxation.

Frames were typically constructed from carved mahogany or walnut, paired with hand-dyed leather or heavy velvet upholstery, brass studding, and internal iron adjustment hardware.

Authentic period examples feature period-appropriate metal ratchet mechanisms, hand-carved wood elements such as scrolls or crests, original brass studding, and traditional frame joinery underneath the upholstery.

Position the chair in a study, library corner, or modern living room as a distinct architectural accent, pairing it with contemporary floor lamps and simple woven textiles.

Treat the leather periodically with a specialist conditioning balsam to prevent drying, apply beeswax to the mahogany framework, and keep mechanical ratchets clean and lightly lubricated.
