Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Traditionally crafted during the Qing period and Victorian export era, these portable chests were designed for storing personal valuables, cosmetics, and jewellery during travel. They typically feature drop handles for transport, secure brass latches, and protective lacquer coatings.

These cases were typically constructed from native wood coated in multiple layers of natural sap-based lacquer to create a durable, moisture-resistant finish. Metal fittings, such as circular brass faceplates and side drop handles, provided structural strength and security.

Authentic pieces display hand-applied lacquer layers, often showing subtle craquelure or age-related shrinkage lines around joints. Hand-painted pictorial scenes, such as traditional landscapes, and hand-hammered brass fittings with original surface oxidisation are key indicators of period craftsmanship.

Position the box on a hallway console, side table, or bedroom dresser to serve as a historic focal point. Its red tone pairs effectively with neutral colour palettes, natural wood surfaces, or contemporary art objects.

Keep the piece away from direct sunlight and fluctuating heat sources to prevent the wood from warping or the lacquer from cracking. Dust gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth, avoiding chemical solvents, silicone polishes, or water.
