FAQs

Stickback and Windsor chairs evolved from traditional vernacular woodworking techniques, particularly popular in rural workshops across Britain and America during the 18th and 19th centuries, known for inserting spindles directly into a solid wooden seat.

These chairs were traditionally constructed using a combination of turned hardwood spindles, a carved solid timber seat, and steam-bent components, often finished with a dark ebonised coating or milk paint.

Authentication relies on examining tool marks, hand-turned joint details, timber shrinkage patterns, and the natural wear and oxidisation of the ebonised finish over time.

Positioning the chair against minimalist walls or pairing it with textured neutral textiles creates a focal point that bridges historical character with modern design sensibilities.

Maintain the surface by dusting with a soft, dry cloth and avoiding direct sunlight or fluctuating humidity to protect the aged timber and historic finish from cracking or fading.
