This painted satinwood ladies workbox from 1910 follows a Sheraton Neoclassical design and functions as a sewing table for an empty corner. The honey brown wood features hand-painted floral garlands, pleated green silk panels on the front, back and sides, and brass hardware including a small lock plate and internal hinges. The rectangular compartment contains fitted wooden dividers, and the domed interior lid displays patterned green fabric upholstery. The piece stands on four slender tapered splayed supports connected near the base by a curved X-frame stretcher centred with a small decorated platform. Hand-painted floral motifs also adorn the top edges of the stand and the stretcher. Measuring 84 cm high, 47 cm wide and 36 cm deep, this table suits daily sewing tasks or display purposes in a home study, bedroom or drawing room today.

Originating in the late 18th century, a ladies workbox table is a specialized piece of occasional furniture crafted with interior compartments and fabric pouches designed to hold needlework, embroidery tools, and writing materials.

These tables were typically constructed from fine hardwoods such as satinwood, mahogany, or rosewood, often accented with hand-painted floral motifs, silk pleated side panels, brass fittings, and delicate marquetry inlays.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints, natural oxidisation on untouched interior wood surfaces, hand-painted decoration displaying fine brushwork, and original brass hinges or lid supports.

A painted workbox functions as a decorative accent piece in a drawing room corner, a distinctive bedside storage table, or an elegant focal point in a hallway bay window.

Keep the item away from direct sunlight and central heating sources to prevent wood movement and fabric fading, dusting gently with a soft microfibre cloth without harsh chemical polishes.
