FAQs

Georgian Windsor chairs are characterised by their construction method where individual spindles and legs are inserted directly into a solid sculpted wooden seat, often featuring distinct regional variations in the back design such as comb backs or hoop backs.

Traditional construction typically utilised a combination of native timbers, frequently employing elm for the heavy saddle seat due to its resistance to splitting, ash or fruitwood for the bent bow and spindles, and beech or pine for the undercarriage legs.

Authenticity is assessed through construction markers such as wedged through-tenon joints, adzed tool marks on the solid seat, hand-turned spindles with subtle irregularities, and natural patina or wear consistent with age.

These pieces function effectively as accent seating in modern spaces, providing textural contrast when paired with minimalist dining tables or utilised as a standalone reading chair in a study or living area.

Preservation requires maintaining stable indoor humidity levels away from direct heat sources to prevent timber shrinkage, alongside periodic application of traditional beeswax to nourish and protect the polished surface.
