Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Originating in France during the late 18th century, the cheval mirrornamed after the French word for horse due to its four-legged supporting framebecame an essential piece of bedroom furniture for full-length viewing as fashions shifted towards fitted garments.

Period cheval mirrors were typically constructed from dense hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, or oak, featuring mortise and tenon joinery, brass pivot hardware to allow the glass to tilt, and heavy weighted bases or scrolling feet for stability.

Authentic 19th-century mirrors often feature hand-silvered glass showing minor foxing or oxidisation, hand-turned wooden elements, dovetail joinery on any integrated drawers, and original hand-forged or brass hardware.

Position the freestanding mirror in a bedroom, dressing room, or hallway to bounce light around the space and create a focal point, pairing its traditional wooden tones with minimalist or contemporary furnishings to create a balanced contrast.

Maintain the piece by keeping it out of direct sunlight to prevent timber fading, dusting the wood with a dry microfibre cloth, and cleaning the glass gently with a neutral cleaner applied to a cloth rather than sprayed directly onto the frame.
