This nineteenth-century Scandinavian country decorative box is a traditional tine form constructed from pine and birch root with a hand-painted blue finish. The piece takes an oval shape featuring bentwood sides held together by birch root lacing and vertical locking pegs, an overhead bent handle on the lid, and expected surface marks, minor staining, an age split to the top with an old metalwork repair, and minor loss to the woodwork on the front edge. It measures 14.6 cm high, 34.5 cm wide, and 28 cm deep. In a home today, this box sits on a sideboard top, shelf, or console table to store small items, keepsakes, or modern accessories while bringing a rustic farmhouse aesthetic to an interior space.

A tine box, or tinebox, is a traditional Scandinavian bentwood vessel historically used for storing and transporting dry provisions, butter, or personal valuables. They feature steam-bent wooden sides stitched together and secured with vertical end pegs.

These boxes were made using thin strips of softwood, such as pine or fir, steam-bent into an oval shape and bound with root lacing. The lid sits flush between flexible wooden posts, known as tines, which clip into place to secure the lid without iron hardware.

Authentic 19th-century examples exhibit natural wear around the flexible locking tines, aged paint distress, hand-carved timber elements, and original root stitching rather than modern metal fixings or adhesives.

A painted tine box functions as a decorative accent on a sideboard, coffee table, or open bookshelf. Its distressed painted finish introduces texture and historical contrast within modern or rustic design schemes.

Maintain the finish by dusting gently with a dry, soft microfibre cloth. Avoid water, harsh chemical cleaners, or liquid polishes that can degrade historical milk paint, and keep the object away from damp conditions or direct heat sources.
