Tartan ware, also known as Mauchline ware, is a type of souvenir wooden item decorated with paper transfers of Scottish tartans, highly popular during the Victorian era from the 1820s onwards.

These items were typically turned from white wood, such as sycamore, and meticulously covered with lithographic printed paper featuring specific clan tartans, then finished with protective layers of varnish.

Authentic pieces exhibit period construction methods, traditional paper lithography showing distinct clan tartans, and characteristic aged patination on the varnished wood surfaces.

Such small decorative objects suit placement on side tables, bookshelves, or mantels where their vibrant patterns and historical character can be appreciated up close.

Keep them out of direct sunlight to prevent fading of the coloured paper transfers, maintain stable indoor humidity levels, and clean only with a dry, soft microfibre cloth.
