Description

These superb pair of Art Nouveau (1880-1910) Rosewood salon chairs reflect Art Nouveau at it's very best. The overstuffed seats and back panels are upholstered in William Morris design fabric. These chairs are possibly the only four in the world! William Morris (1834- 1896) instigated The arts and Craft movement and along with others (The brotherhood) - and they changed design and manufacturing forever.

Art Nouveau was, as it's name implies.... A new style... Not copied or revived, but a new style that reflected the climate of the times.

Rosewood was a hardwood that was imported from India, it is somewhat expensive. It was chiefly used as a veneer or for inlay work. During the 19th century wealthy and important clients ordered furniture, such as these chairs to be made from Rosewood, thus demonstrating their extreme wealth and position in society. These chairs represent high design, superb craftsmanship, wealth and power!

This chair is a set of 4.

Originating in the late 19th century, Art Nouveau was an international philosophy and style of art, architecture, and applied arts that was inspired by natural forms and structures, particularly the curved lines of plants and flowers.

Pieces from this period typically utilise solid hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, or oak, often featuring hand-carved organic motifs, mortise and tenon joinery, and traditional upholstery techniques.

Authentic items display period-correct joinery, natural ageing of the wood and hardware, hand-carved details rather than cast resin, and traditional textile weaves consistent with the late 19th or early 20th century.

These chairs work well as statement accent pieces paired with a minimalist contemporary table or within a maximalist scheme to add historical texture and organic curves to the room.

Maintain antique wood by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources, applying appropriate microcrystalline wax periodically, and protecting vintage textiles from moisture and excessive abrasion.
