This pair of nineteenth century Japanese Meiji period earthenware vases by Kizan exhibits a cream ground with a fine crackle glaze. Each baluster shaped vessel is decorated with enamelled motifs of songbirds perched amongst berry laden branches, picked out in red and green alongside gilt highlights, and finished with gilded rims at the top and bottom. The photograph shows purple fabric behind the vases, round flattened rims, and detailed plumage on the birds. Measuring 15 cm high, 8 cm wide, and 8 cm deep, these pieces suit placement on a mantelpiece within an English country house interior, bringing traditional craftsmanship and naturalistic imagery into a living space.

Satsuma pottery originated in Satsuma Province during the late sixteenth century, characterised by a cream-coloured crackle-glazed earthenware body decorated with polychrome enamels and gold leaf detailing.

Satsuma ware is constructed from low-fired earthenware featuring a clear glaze that develops fine crackle lines, finished with overglaze polychrome enamels and hand-applied gilded accents.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit fine, uniform glaze crackle, detailed hand-painted enamelling, gilded highlights, and maker marks or studio signatures on the underside base.

Position them as a symmetrical pair on a mantelpiece, sideboard, or console table where their detailed artwork and gilded accents provide warmth and historical texture.

Dust gently with a soft dry cloth or microfibre duster, avoiding water immersion or chemical cleaning agents that can damage fragile overglaze enamels and original gilding.
