Satsuma ware is a category of Japanese earthenware that originated in the Satsuma province during the late sixteenth century. During the Meiji period, production expanded significantly to supply Western markets with richly decorated ceramics featuring gilding, overglaze enamels, and figurative cartouche scenes.

Satsuma pieces are crafted from a soft-paste earthenware clay body coated in a clear, finely crackled glaze. The surfaces are subsequently adorned with intricate polychrome overglaze enamels and fine gold leaf or liquid gold gilding.

Authentic Satsuma ceramics feature a characteristic ivory-coloured body with a micro-crackle glaze visible under magnification. Genuine period examples usually display detailed hand-painted enamelling, crisp gilding, and often carry maker marks or signatures painted on the base in red or gold.

A garniture of vases is designed to be displayed symmetrically, making it well suited for a fireplace mantelpiece, a dining room sideboard, or a long console table. The deep cobalt blue and gold palette contrasts effectively against dark wood furniture or contemporary neutral backdrops.
