Rare Antique Art Nouveau Tea Caddy C.1910

1900 - 1920
For Sale by Puckerings
Description

A rare, exquisite and very stylish single tea caddy in a fabulous Art Nouveau design dating to around 1910.

The style reminds me very much of the Glasgow School of Arts work in the style of Charles Rennie Mackintosh.

The work is top qualtiy, with equisite wooden and Ivory marquetry inlay.

The box comes with a display key, not working as the teeth in the top lock have been broken into at some point, but the lock is original and better left than replaced.

The lid opens to reveal a single lidded compartment with a turned Ivory knob with inlaid Ivory backing.

An exceptional box in excellent condition. The footprint measures 3 3/4" square and standing 6 1/4" tall.

This rare antique tea caddy dates from around 1910 and embodies the distinctive Art Nouveau style of the period. Constructed from warm brown mahogany with contrasting satinwood and ivory marquetry inlay, the tall rectangular vessel displays intricate floral motifs and characteristic whiplash curves across both the body and the flat cover. A dark beaded trim edges the lid above a central keyhole escutcheon fitted with an original lock. Standing on flat feet, the box measures 10 cm by 10 cm at the base and rises to a height of 16 cm. Inside, the lidded compartment retains a turned ivory knob with inlaid ivory backing. The upper lock mechanism shows signs of historical breakage to the teeth, though the lock itself remains intact and unaltered. This decorative container suits placement on a living room sideboard top or a hallway surface in a traditional home interior, functioning as a striking ornamental accessory or a compact storage piece for small keepsakes.

Art Nouveau emerged in the late nineteenth century and peaked around 1900 to 1910, characterized by sinuous lines, stylized floral patterns, and organic forms. Tea caddies produced during this era incorporated these flowing motifs through delicate wood marquetry and metalwork, reflecting the movements focus on decorative craftsmanship.

Traditional tea caddies from the Edwardian and Art Nouveau periods were constructed from hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, or oak, often decorated with veneer marquetry using satinwood, boxwood, and fruitwoods. Internal compartments were frequently lined with foil, zinc, or velvet to preserve the flavour and dryness of the tea leaves.

Authentic pieces display hand-cut wood inlay with subtle variations, natural timber oxidisation, and age-consistent wear around the base and keyhole. Lock mechanisms typically feature original steel or brass fittings, and construction joints should show evidence of period joinery rather than modern adhesives.

A decorative tea caddy can be displayed atop a sideboard, mantlepiece, or desk as a standalone accent piece. Its warm wood tones and intricate inlay work provide visual texture and historical depth when contrasted against modern, minimalist backgrounds.

Keep wooden boxes away from direct sunlight, radiators, and high humidity to prevent the wood from warping or veneer lifting. Dust gently with a soft microfibre cloth and apply a high-grade beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year to maintain the luster.
