Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

An Aesthetic Movement ebonised overmantel mirror is a late 19th-century wall mirror designed to sit above a fireplace. It features dark-stained or black-painted wood frames influenced by Anglo-Japanese design, often accented with incised parcel gilding, turned spindles, and stylized painted motifs.

These mirrors typically feature solid hardwood frames stained black to simulate ebony, hand-applied gold leaf gilding in incised grooves, painted decorative panels, and mercury or silvered glass mirror plates.

Authentic pieces show hand-turned architectural elements like spindles, genuine gold leaf detailing within incised patterns, original wooden backboards with historic fasteners, and age-appropriate wear or light foxing on the glass.

Position the mirror directly above a fireplace mantelpiece or a contemporary hallway console table. The black and gold palette pairs effectively against light neutral walls or deep saturated tones to create a clear visual focal point.

Dust the frame regularly with a dry, soft microfibre cloth. Avoid using water, spray cleaners, or abrasive polishes on gilt or painted areas, as moisture and chemicals can lift leaf gilding and damage original paintwork.
