This French chateau overmantle mirror, dating from 1910, is constructed from wood and gesso with a glass plate and finished in a cream paint with parcel gilt highlights. The square frame has a moulded edge, an arched inner window aperture, and gold leaf foliate spandrels in each of the four corners. It retains its original glass and wood back, showing very good condition throughout. The piece measures 88 cm high, 93 cm wide, and 3 cm deep. Positioned above a fireplace mantel in a living room, dining room, or bedroom, it brings traditional French character to an interior wall scheme. The pale cream and gold colour palette complements neutral or period interior decors, reflecting light into the space while serving as a decorative wall hanging.

An overmantel mirror is constructed to sit directly above a fireplace hearth or mantel, featuring a flat base and decorative upper moulding. The term parcel gilt refers to an object that is partially gilded, combining painted wood surfaces with gold leaf accents to highlight specific carved ornamentation.

These mirrors were traditionally crafted from carved softwoods like pine or lime, coated in layers of gesso prior to being finished in tempera paint. Raised spandrels and moulding were layered with clay bole and real gold leaf before mirror glass was fitted.

Authentic period examples demonstrate subtle craquelure across painted gesso areas and gentle wear where the reddish clay bole shows through the gilded highlights. The reverse typically features hand-sawn wooden backboards fastened with historical fixings.

Position the mirror centrally above a fireplace mantelpiece, marble console table, or architectural ledge to anchor the space. The soft contrast between painted surfaces and gold leaf accents complements both classical and contemporary interior schemes.

Dust the frame lightly with a dry, soft camel-hair brush or feather duster, avoiding water or chemical polish which can dissolve historical gesso and lift fragile gold leaf. Spray glass cleaner directly onto a cloth rather than the glass to protect the inner frame edge.
