This pair of nineteenth century Anglo-Indian Colonial armchairs originates from Ceylon and is fashioned from solid dark brown ebony with hand-woven natural cane inserts forming the curved backrests and seats. Each chair exhibits detailed carvings along the top crest rail and scroll armrests, alongside reeded arm contours, intricate lower rail embellishments, and pronounced carved feet. The frame construction includes downward sloping profiles designed for lounge seating, supported by robust side rails and distinct carved corner elements. Practical dimensions measure 91 cm high by 61 cm wide and 111 cm deep per piece. Ideal placement within a modern interior includes a gentleman's library, a reading room, or a spacious sunroom, where these armchairs function effectively as statement seating for relaxation and reading.

Ceylonese colonial furniture originated during the Dutch and British colonial periods in Sri Lanka, blending traditional European shapes with local woodcraft traditions and Indigenous flora motifs.

Craftsmen primarily utilised dense indigenous hardwoods like solid ebony, satinwood, and calamander, combined with hand-woven rattan cane panels to allow air circulation in humid tropical environments.

Authentic period pieces display substantial weight due to the density of ebony wood, crisp hand-carved detailing showcasing organic or animal forms, and traditional joinery such as mortise and tenon construction.

These dark wood accent chairs serve as focal points when paired alongside modern upholstered sofas, minimal neutral rugs, or positioned within a library space to provide architectural contrast.

Clean ebony wood using a soft microfiber cloth and apply high-grade microcrystalline wax periodically, while moistening woven cane slightly with distilled water to prevent dryness and cracking.
