Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An Edwardian chinoiserie lacquer and painted cabinet on stand circa 1910 in early Georgian style stands on cabriole legs terminating in claw feet. Constructed from wood finished in black and gold lacquer, the piece measures 132 cm high, 96.5 cm wide, and 38 cm deep. The pair of hinged doors open to reveal a scarlet interior complete with drawers and compartments. Gilded lacquerwork decorates the exterior surfaces, depicting pagoda landscapes alongside decorative brass hinges. The left door features a contrasting red inner face ornamented with painted botanical designs, whilst the apron of the stand is embellished with painted motifs above slender curved legs. In a contemporary home, this cabinet suits placement in a living room, hallway, or study as an accent furnishing for display and storage.

FAQs

Chinoiserie is a European decorative style originating in the seventeenth century that features romanticised interpretations of East Asian art, landscapes, and architecture. It experienced major revival periods in the mid-eighteenth century and again during the late Victorian and Edwardian eras.

These cabinets are constructed from timber bases finished with built-up layers of resinous lacquer. Decorative details are applied using gold leaf or paint, often featuring brass hinges, escutcheons, and structural frames with carved cabriole legs.

Authentic pieces from the early twentieth century feature period-appropriate joinery such as hand-cut dovetails on interior drawers, subtle crackling or patina across the lacquered surfaces, and characteristic Edwardian proportions on the supporting stand.

A decorated cabinet functions well as an focal point when positioned against neutral walls or set within eclectic spaces. Contrast the detailed surface patterning with understated modern ceramics or simple architectural lighting.

Maintain lacquered surfaces by dusting regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and keeping the piece away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight. Avoid solvent cleaners, excess moisture, or silicone polishes which can degrade the protective lacquer layer.
