A near pair of Georgian bedside tables dating from the early 19th century, rendered in solid mahogany with a warm brown timber colour and a rich, mellow patina. Each tall table incorporates a rectangular top with a shaped and scalloped gallery, an open compartment over a single drawer fitted with a small brass ring pull, and slender square tapered legs united by an X-frame stretcher featuring a circular central recess. The timber displays subtle differences in grain and tone across the pair, adding visible character and age. Measuring 78 cm high, 38 cm wide, and 37 cm deep, the furniture works well as traditional bedside tables or as decorative lamp stands in a sitting room.

Georgian bedside tables, dating from the 18th to early 19th centuries, typically feature dense mahogany timber, tray or scalloped galleries, single drawers, and slender square or turned legs, often reinforced with stretchers.

Primary woods were predominantly Cuban or Honduran mahogany, prized for its grain and durability, while secondary drawer linings utilised oak or pine, fitted with cast brass ring or swan-neck handles.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints, hand-planed drawer bottoms, natural wood shrinkage around joints, and aged brass fittings alongside deep, authentic patination that cannot be replicated artificially.

These tables function effectively as nightstands flanking a bed, as slim end tables beside a sofa in a living room, or as compact accent stands in a hallway or reading alcove.

Keep the timber away from direct heat sources and radiators to prevent shrinking or warping, dust regularly with a clean microfibre cloth, and apply a light coating of natural beeswax polish annually along the grain.
