This small Italian Renaissance style casket dates from circa 1890-1900 and is constructed from wood finished with gesso, gold leaf, and paint in gold, brown, and multicolour tones. The rectangular body stands on four black turned ball feet beneath moulded gilded borders and holds a stepped lid decorated with painted motifs. A detailed figurative medieval painting adorns the front panel, accompanied by portraits and cartouches containing crests. Surface wear includes scratches and abrasions distributed all over the finish, displaying its age. Measuring 17 cms in height, 12 cms in depth, and 15 cms in width, the compact box serves well on a sideboard top or within a gentleman's library for display or storage.

FAQs

An Italian painted casket is a small decorative wooden box or coffret, historically produced during and inspired by the Renaissance period. These containers were designed to store small valuables and often featured hand-painted panels depicting classical, medieval, or allegorical scenes surrounded by gilded moulding.

These caskets were typically carved from solid wood, such as walnut or pine, and coated with gesso. The surface was then decorated using tempera or oil paints alongside gold leaf gilding, with details often raised using pastiglia technique before painting.

Authentic period pieces show signs of age through natural craquelure in the paint, genuine gilding wear, and hand-cut joinery. Revival pieces from the 19th century often display smoother wood preparation beneath the gesso, different paint pigments, and distinct ironwork or hardware.

A painted casket serves as a striking focal point when set upon a sideboard top, bookshelf, or desk. Pairing the object with modern lighting or contemporary glass art creates an appealing visual contrast between historical craftsmanship and clean contemporary lines.

Keep the casket in a climate-controlled environment away from direct sunlight, radiators, and high humidity to prevent wood movement and flaking paint. Dust gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush, avoiding liquid cleaners or abrasive polishes.
