FAQs

The Boston rocker originated in New England during the early nineteenth century as a variation of the traditional Windsor chair. It gained widespread popularity across America due to its comfortable contoured seat, tall spindled back, and distinctive rolling crest rail, often decorated with stencilled or hand-painted artwork.

Boston rockers were typically constructed using a combination of native American hardwoods, such as pine for the thick contoured seat, alongside maple, oak, birch, or beech for the turned legs, spindles, and arms. The finished chairs were usually painted in dark tones and decorated with gilt or polychrome accents.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces feature hand-turned spindles, a thick pine seat with a pronounced scoop, and peg or mortise-and-tenon joinery. They often show natural signs of age, including wear to the dark paint along the armrests and rockers, as well as remnants of original stencilled crest ornamentation.

An antique rocking chair creates a focal point when placed in a bedroom corner, living room reading nook, or nursery. Pairing the dark timber with soft modern textiles, such as a neutral wool throw or linen cushion, balances the historic dark wood finish within contemporary interiors.

Maintain painted wooden furniture by dusting regularly with a dry, soft microfibre cloth. Avoid using harsh chemical polishes, solvent cleaners, or excess water, which can degrade original painted details, and position the chair away from direct heat sources to prevent timber warping.
