Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Writing slopes were portable wooden boxes developed in the 18th and 19th centuries to allow travellers and scholars to write correspondence on the move. When opened, the box unfolds into an angled surface, often lined with leather or velvet, containing slots for inkwells, pens, and paper.

High-quality writing slopes were primarily crafted from dense hardwoods such as rosewood, mahogany, or walnut. Brass was frequently used for exterior edge binding, cartouches, stringing inlay, and flush side handles to strengthen the structure against damage during travel.

Authentic period writing slopes feature hand-cut dovetail joinery, brass inlay fitted flush into the timber, and period-correct brass mortise locks. The rosewood display characteristic dark grain patterns, and any internal brass hinges will usually show minor unevenness consistent with historical manufacturing methods.

An antique writing slope functions well as a decorative accent on a desk, console table, or deep shelving unit. Left closed, it adds rich wood tones and brass detail to a modern scheme, or it can be displayed open to exhibit decorative stationery and vintage writing instruments.

Keep the wood away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent shrinkage or cracking. Dust the exterior gently with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish occasionally, taking care not to snag polished metal edges or loosen thin brass inlay.
