This large Napoleon III mirror from 1870 brings French nineteenth century styling to a home. The piece consists of a warm brown mahogany frame holding an original bevelled glass plate. A prominent ormolu cresting sits at the top of the timber surround, decorated with foliate carving and a central shell motif. The frame itself shows clean structural lines with a simple bevelled moulding running along the outer edge. The signature on the ormolu mount adds a traditional makers detail to the decorative metalwork. Measuring 158 cm high by 100 cm wide and 8 cm deep, this substantial wall mirror works well positioned above a sideboard in a dining room, hallway, or living space. The vertical proportions allow the mirror to reflect natural light and open up the room while adding a classic French chateau feel to the interior design.

Originating during the Second French Empire in the mid-to-late 19th century, Napoleon III style incorporates eclectic revivalist elements, often featuring rich mahogany veneers, gilded bronze or ormolu cresting, and classical neoclassical proportions.

These mirrors generally feature dense solid wood or veneered frames, often utilising mahogany or walnut, topped with cast brass, bronze, or wooden cresting, alongside thick silvered glass plates.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-finished timber backs, naturally aged glass showing light desilverisation, and heavy cast bronze or brass mounts secured with historic iron or brass fixings.

Position the mirror above a console table or lean it against a focal wall to reflect light, broaden visual space, and introduce architectural contrast against modern clean lines.

Dust the wooden frame regularly with a soft microfibre cloth, apply specialized wood wax sparingly, and avoid spraying glass cleaners directly onto the plate to prevent moisture ingress behind the frame.
