Russian Lacquered Box with Hand Painted Portrait, C.1920

A superb small Russian box, dating to circa 1920, most likely intended for storing jewellery, rings or cufflinks.

Of beautifully crafted construction, the box is made from heavy, dense timber, finished with a striking black lacquered exterior and a rich red interior. The hinged brass lid is adorned with a captivating hand-painted portrait of a charming young woman, her hair elegantly arranged and tied with a red ribbon. Wearing a flattering blue gown, she turns her head slightly to one side, revealing her graceful neck and finely depicted features. Her remarkable eyes gaze directly towards the viewer, lending the portrait an engaging and almost lifelike quality.

The portrait is signed in red in the lower right-hand corner of the lid, adding further interest to this attractive and characterful piece.

The box remains in remarkably original condition, with its elegant lacquered finish, contrasting red interior and beautifully painted portrait combining to create a particularly appealing example of early twentieth-century Russian decorative craftsmanship.
