17th Century Fruitwood Child`s Lambing Chair C.1680

17th century
Description

A wonderful early lambing chair made for a child or small person, ideal to sit down by the fire, or in an inglenook or cottage room with a beautiful linear simplicity and retaining all of its original timbers.

.

The seat with old wearand old worm tracks (long since dead), the substantial twin planked back with hand forged iron nail fixings and having developed a narrow shrinkage gap. Boarded back and sides to the seat and well shaped wings.

.

All original timbers with a brace added underneath the seat board – only visible when you turn the chair upside down and this appears to be a 19th century belt and braces addition and an oak strip at the top of the back, with lovely patina, which may be original or added early in the chairs life.

.

Very robust and usable, no movement in the joints, old shakes and cracks – all as old as the hills and completely stable – chips and small losses consistent with an early piece of vernacular working furniture.

.

Children would have helped on the farm and with lambing and the tall back and side wings were designed to keep out the chilly winds whilst waiting up in the wee small hours.

.

Utterly charming, very original and a lovely small and early lambing chair.

.

Dimensions are:

38.5 inches high, 17.5 inches wide at top and 16 inches wide at base, 11 inches deep. Seat height from floor is 13 inches and seat depth is 11.5 inches.

A lambing chair is a traditional regional English wing chair, typically featuring a solid timber frame, high enclosed back, side wings, and a box base. Originating in rural farming communities, the design was created to shield the occupant from cold draughts near fireplaces or in drafty outbuildings.

These chairs were predominantly crafted from local hardwoods such as oak, elm, or native fruitwoods. Construction relied on thick solid planks, mortise and tenon joinery, wooden pegs, and hand-planed panels.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-hewn surface textures, hand-cut wooden dowels, irregular shrinkage lines along timber boards, and deep natural patination around areas of frequent contact. The construction lacks modern machine-cut screws or wire nails.

Position the piece near a hearth, in a hallway corner, or alongside contemporary neutral upholstery to create structural contrast. Adding a sheepskin rug or woven wool throw enhances the tactile quality of the wood finish.

Keep the chair away from direct heat sources and radiators to prevent wood shrinkage or cracking. Regular application of a high-grade beeswax polish maintains the timber moisture and protects the historic surface.
