Rare 18th Century Firing Glass C1750

18th century
For Sale by Exhibit Antiques
Description

Description

A very rare mid 18th century firing glass dating to c1750.

It has an unusual flared bell bowl with a substantial solid section at the base, set above a short plain stem and a characteristically thick, heavy firing foot.

Firing glasses were made specifically for ceremonial toasting. After the toast had been drunk, the glass could be brought firmly down onto the table, the heavy foot producing a sharp report. When performed by a group together, the sound was said to resemble a volley of gunfire...hence the name "firing glass."

They became particularly associated with clubs, drinking societies, Masonic gatherings and other forms of communal and ceremonial drinking during the 18th century. The unusually thick foot was therefore not simply a stylistic feature...it provided the strength and stability required for the ritual.

Bell bowls on firing glasses are exceptionally rare, with the vast majority encountered having a round funnel or conical bowl. This is only the second bell bowl firing glass we have handled, making it a particularly interesting and unusual survivor from the mid 18th century.

This clear lead glass firing glass dates to the Georgian period around 1750 and is designed for ceremonial toasting. It has an unusual flared bell bowl with a substantial solid section at the base, set above a short plain stem and a characteristically thick, heavy firing foot. The construction provides the strength and stability required for the ritual of striking the table after a toast. Firing glasses became associated with clubs, drinking societies, and Masonic gatherings during the 18th century, and this specimen stands 11.9 cm high. Today, this piece serves as a collector's item for display on a sideboard top in a gentleman's library or dining room. The clear material catches the light, highlighting the smooth curved surfaces of the bowl and the heavy circular base. The glass is recorded in excellent condition with no chips, cracks or restoration, representing a functional piece of social history from the mid 18th century.

A firing glass is an 18th-century drinking vessel designed with a thick, heavy base, traditionally used for rapping on tables during toasts in private clubs or Masonic gatherings to produce a sound resembling gunfire.

During the mid-18th century, English glassware was primarily hand-blown using lead crystal flint glass, characterised by high clarity, structural weight, a clear resonant tone, and visible pontil scars on the underside.

Authentic examples typically display a thick, terraced or disc-shaped firing foot, subtle hand-blown irregularities, minute air inclusions within the glass body, and a snapped or ground pontil mark underneath the base.

These glass vessels can be arranged along a dining room sideboard top, styled inside an illuminated glass cabinet, or grouped on a brass tray within a traditional library setting.

Hand wash using lukewarm water and mild detergent, avoiding rapid thermal changes and dishwashers, then dry immediately with a soft, lint-free cloth to prevent water marks.
