Georgian Facet Cut Dram Glass C1780

18th century
For Sale by Exhibit Antiques
Description

Technical Description

A fine 18th-century Georgian facet cut dram glass, dating to c1780.

It has a round funnel bowl set above a stem decorated with elongated hexagonal facet cuts, standing on a conical foot with a rough pontil to the underside.

Of all the 18th-century drinking glass forms, facet cut drams are, alongside air twist drams, among the most difficult to find.

Occasionally, we acquire several examples together from collections that have been assembled over many years. However, as a general rule, these glasses are exceptionally difficult to source.

Whether this is due to relatively small numbers originally being produced or a particularly low survival rate is difficult to establish. What we can say, from our own experience, is that facet cut drams are few and far between when compared with other 18th-century dram glasses.

Date & Origin

England, c1780. Period of George III.

This clear lead crystal dram glass dates from the Georgian period around 1780 during the reign of George III. The piece possesses a round funnel bowl positioned above a stem adorned with elongated hexagonal facet cuts, and it stands upon a conical foot. Visible details include a rough pontil to the underside and age-related wear, with clear glass construction and a high-gloss finish. The glass has a height of 11.8 cm, a bowl diameter of 5.2 cm, a foot diameter of 6.7 cm, and weighs 129 grams. Items of this type suit placement on a sideboard top within a gentleman's library or dining room setting as a decorative display piece or collector's item. The design reflects 18th-century English glassware craftsmanship suitable for formal interior arrangements.

A Georgian facet cut dram glass is a small 18th-century English drinking vessel designed for serving spirits or cordials. The style is characterised by geometric facet cutting on the stem, which gained popularity during the late 18th century following glass taxation laws.

These glasses were mouth-blown using heavy lead crystal, valued for its clarity and light refraction. The diamond facets were carved by hand using iron and stone wheels before being hand-polished.

Authentic pieces typically show a rough or ground pontil mark under the base, subtle irregularities in the hand-cut stem facets, and a soft dark tone characteristic of historic lead metal. Minute air bubbles and faint striations are also common in period glass.

Displaying stemware on a tray across a sideboard top or within a glass cabinet brings historical texture into a dining area. Pairing them alongside modern decanters creates an elegant contrast.

Wash hand-blown glass by hand using warm water and mild liquid soap with a soft sponge, avoiding dishwashers entirely. Dry immediately with a clean linen cloth to prevent moisture marks and thermal stress.
