Rare 18th Century Engraved Glass Rummer C1790 with Firing Foot

18th century
For Sale by Exhibit Antiques
Description

Description

A superb and highly unusual late 18th-century glass rummer.

It has a pan-top bucket bowl, finely engraved with a cross-hatched border band incorporating small oval cuts, with engraved stars continuing around the body of the bowl. The bowl sits on a plain stem above a notably thick firing foot.

The overall form is exceptional. The combination of the bucket bowl, plain stem, and particularly the substantial firing foot is very rarely encountered on rummers of this period. Indeed, in over 20 years of handling and collecting, this is the first example we have seen with this exact combination of features.

Historical Context

English clear glass rummers of the 18th and 19th centuries were sturdy, practical drinking glasses used primarily for ale, wine and punch. Their large bowls and heavy feet made them ideal for taverns, clubs, and social gatherings where durability and generous measures were important.

Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE GEORGIAN ERA:
Rough snapped pontil scar on the base: hand-blown work before polished pontils became standard.
Wheel-engraved stars and hatched borders: popular decorative motifs around 1790.
Thick firing foot: designed to withstand rapping on tavern tables during toasts.
Subtle striations and faint bubbles in the metal: typical hand-gathered lead glass.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This clear glass rummer dates from the Georgian period around 1790 during the reign of King George III in England or Ireland. The pan-top bucket bowl has an engraved cross-hatched border band incorporating small oval cuts, with engraved stars continuing around the body. The bowl sits on a plain stem above a thick firing foot. The glass measures 12.8 cm in height, with an 8.8 cm rim diameter and a 7.5 cm foot diameter. In a home today, this drinking glass suits placement on a sideboard top for display, or for serving ale, wine and punch during gatherings. The condition is excellent, showing no chips, cracks or restoration. The clear material allows light to pass through the engraved star motifs, and the sturdy construction reflects the traditional utility of drinking vessels from this era.

A rummer is a short-stemmed drinking vessel with a wide bowl, introduced in the late eighteenth century for serving alcoholic beverages like rum punch or ale.

Georgian rummers were hand-blown from lead crystal, featuring hand-carved or wheel-engraved motifs and sturdy feet formed directly on the stem.

Authentic pieces often show subtle hand-tooling marks, a pontil mark on the base, minor bubbles or striations in the glass, and slight asymmetry from hand production.

Antique goblets and rummers can be grouped on open shelving, displayed inside a glass cabinet, or arranged along a sideboard to catch natural light.

Wash historical glassware by hand using lukewarm water and mild detergent, avoiding dishwashers and sudden temperature changes to prevent cracking.
