This pair of Victorian etched pan rummers dates from the end of the 19th Century. Formed from clear glass, each piece has a pan-shaped bowl decorated with floral etching and panel moulding above a short stem with large bladed knops and a circular base. The visual details include vertical optic ribbing on the lower bowls, polished rims, and transparent moulded glass construction. Measuring 13 cm high, 10 cm wide, and 10 cm deep, the pair presents a traditional English Country House design. These items find a practical home placed on a sideboard top in a dining room or living space. They suit everyday use or display, with a capacity suitable for serving wine, beer, or spirits.

FAQs

A pan rummer is a type of eighteenth or nineteenth-century drinking glass characterised by a wide, shallow upper rim tapering into a narrower lower bowl, set on a short stem and flat base. Originally designed for spirits like rum, punch, or toddies, these vessels were popular throughout the Georgian and Victorian eras.

Victorian rummers were typically hand-blown using flint glass or lead crystal, resulting in a resonant chime and noticeable weight. Decorative elements were applied using techniques such as copper-wheel engraving, acid etching, or panel moulding along the bowl.

Authentic Victorian rummers often display subtle irregularities in weight and shape due to hand-crafting techniques. Look for polished pontil marks on the underside of the foot, wear consistent with age on the base rim, and fine, precise wheel-engraved or etched patterns rather than modern pressed motifs.

Antique rummers can be integrated into modern homes as functional barware for cocktails or displayed on open shelving and sideboards. They also serve as distinctive vessels for small floral arrangements or desktop organisation in contemporary settings.

Hand wash antique glassware in lukewarm water with a mild detergent, avoiding sudden temperature changes that could cause thermal shock. Refrain from using dishwashers or abrasive scouring pads, and dry thoroughly with a lint-free soft cloth to prevent water spots and scratching.
