Description

A very fine 19th-century engraved ale rummer, dating to c1840.

It has a bucket bowl finely engraved with hops and barley in saltire, supported on a short stem with a central angular knop. Conical foot with a snapped pontil.

A particularly attractive example, with classic hop and barley engraving traditionally associated with ale glasses of the period.

Date & Origin

England, c1820. Period of King George III.

Condition

Excellent. No chips, cracks or restortion.

Dimensions

Height: 11.5 cm

Rim diameter: 7.8 cm

Foot diameter: 6.8 cm.

Rummers originated in Britain during the late eighteenth century and remained popular through the Regency era. They were robust drinking vessels used for serving ale, cider, or punch in private homes and taverns.
