Georgian Half Wrythen Ale Glass C1800

18th century
For Sale by Exhibit Antiques
Description

Description

A Georgian ale glass dating to c1800.

It has a conical bowl with tight wrythen moulding spiralling around the lower half, resting on an angular knop stem and supported by a conical foot with a snapped pontil.

The tight wrythen moulding creates a particularly attractive optical effect, catching and refracting the light through the spiralling ribs while leaving the upper part of the bowl plain.

Historical Context

Wrythen moulding was a popular decorative technique in Georgian glassmaking, produced by twisting the hot glass while it was being formed in a ribbed mould. The resulting spiral pattern provided decoration without the additional labour and expense of wheel cutting and, particularly in candlelight, gave the glass an attractive sense of movement and brilliance.

Date & Origin

England, c1800. Period of George III.

Condition

Very good, a single pin prick to the central knop which is barely visible. No chips cracks or restoration.

Dimensions

Height: 13.1cm.

Bowl diameter: 6.9cm.

Foot diameter: 7.2cm.

Weight: 180 grams

Declaration

Exhibit Antiques has dated this Georgian Wrythen Ale Glass to the Georgian era.

This clear lead glass ale goblet originates from the Georgian period of George III around 1800 in England. The vessel features a conical bowl with tight half wrythen spiral moulding on the lower half, a knopped stem with an angular knop, and a conical foot with a snapped pontil. The clear lead glass catches and refracts light through its spiral ribs. The glass has a height of 13.1cm, a bowl diameter of 6.9cm, a foot diameter of 7.2cm, and a weight of 180 grams. It is suitable for display on a sideboard top in a gentleman's library or dining room setting.

A Georgian half wrythen ale glass is an 18th or early 19th-century drinking vessel designed specifically for ale, featuring distinctive diagonal or spiral rib moulding across the lower half of its bowl.

These vessels were hand-blown using lead glass (flint glass), created by gathering molten glass on a blowpipe, dip-moulding to form the wrythen pattern, and joining the bowl to a hand-formed knopped stem and conical foot.

Authentic pieces feature a greyish-blue or dark cast characteristic of early lead glass, a hand-snapped pontil mark or smoothed pontil scar beneath the base, minor asymmetry from hand-blowing, and age-related wear on the foot rim.

Antique stemware can be displayed in illuminated glass cabinets, arranged alongside period decanters on a dining room sideboard, or integrated into a curated bar cart setup.

Wash by hand using tepid water and a mild detergent, avoiding harsh temperature changes that cause thermal shock. Dry immediately with a lint-free microfibre cloth and store away from direct sunlight.
