Rib moulding is rare on a bonnet glass, the first we have had in 2 years. Th vast majority being diamond or honeycomb moulded.

Originating in the late 17th and 18th centuries, a bonnet glassoften termed a monteith glass due to its scalloped profile resembling a Monteith punch bowlis a small stemmed vessel. These glasses were primarily used during the Georgian era to serve individual portions of jellies, sweetmeats, or condiments at formal dining tables.

These pieces were hand-blown using a lead glass formula developed in Britain. Glassmakers blew molten glass into a ribbed dip-mould to create the characteristic surface pattern before tooling the flared rim and joining the bowl to a short pedestal stem and flat circular foot.

Authentic 18th-century glassware usually exhibits a snap pontil mark or ground pontil on the base, natural light surface wear on the bottom contact rim, a subtle greyish tint characteristic of early lead metal, and tiny air bubbles or seeds trapped within the body.
