Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1750s:
Rough snapped pontil mark under the foot: glassmaking before ground pontils became standard.
Mould-blown ribs on the bowl and stem: typical Georgian decorative technique.
Minute bubbles and grey tone in the metal: early hand-gathered lead glass.
Fine wear scratches beneath the foot rim: normal friction from long domestic handling.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This clear lead glass bonnet glass dates from the 18th-century Georgian period of King George III. The piece takes the form of a small drinking vessel featuring a rib-moulded, double-curved ogee bowl, supported by a short rudimentary pedestal stem and a flat circular foot with a snapped pontil. The clear glass shows vertical ribbing across the bowl and lower stem sections, maintaining an excellent condition with no chips, cracks, or restoration visible. Practical dimensions measure 8.1 cm in height, with a rim diameter of 5.8 cm and a foot diameter of 5.3 cm. This small glassware item suits display placement upon an English Country House sideboard top or within a cabinet setting, adding period character to a tabletop or serving surface.

Originating in the late 17th and 18th centuries, a bonnet glassoften termed a monteith glass due to its scalloped profile resembling a Monteith punch bowlis a small stemmed vessel. These glasses were primarily used during the Georgian era to serve individual portions of jellies, sweetmeats, or condiments at formal dining tables.

These pieces were hand-blown using a lead glass formula developed in Britain. Glassmakers blew molten glass into a ribbed dip-mould to create the characteristic surface pattern before tooling the flared rim and joining the bowl to a short pedestal stem and flat circular foot.

Authentic 18th-century glassware usually exhibits a snap pontil mark or ground pontil on the base, natural light surface wear on the bottom contact rim, a subtle greyish tint characteristic of early lead metal, and tiny air bubbles or seeds trapped within the body.

A Georgian bonnet glass can be styled within an illuminated glazed display cabinet, placed on a sideboard top alongside contemporary ceramics, or repurposed on a dressing table to store small personal items.

Antique lead glass should always be washed by hand in lukewarm water using a soft cloth and mild detergent. Sudden temperature shifts must be avoided to prevent thermal shock, and automatic dishwashers should never be used.
