18th Century Tincture Glass C1790

18th century
For Sale by Exhibit Antiques
Description

Description

An 18th-century tincture glass dating to c.1790. It has a conical bowl with a band of flute cutting to the lower half. The stem is column cut, leading down to a conical foot with a snapped pontil.

The glass holds approximately 20 ml, considerably less than a standard spirit measure, and as such was almost certainly intended for use as a tincture glass. Tincture glasses were small drinking vessels used during the 18th century for administering medicinal tinctures and other concentrated remedies. During this period, tinctures formed an important part of both domestic and professional medicine. Apothecaries, physicians and households commonly prepared remedies from ingredients such as gentian, rhubarb, camphor, opium and various herbs, all preserved in spirits.

Typically plain in form and holding only a very small measure, these glasses allowed the accurate measurement of medicinal preparations dissolved in alcohol.

This Georgian tincture glass is an 18th-century piece of English glassware made from clear lead crystal. The vessel has a conical bowl featuring a band of flute cutting around the lower half, a column-cut stem, and a wide conical foot with a snapped pontil. The clear material allows the contents to be fully visible, and the small bowl holds approximately 20 ml, with an overall height of 8.8 cm, a rim diameter of 3.7 cm, and a foot diameter of 5.2 cm. In a modern interior, this item functions well as a decorative display object on a sideboard top in a gentleman's library or study. The clear lead crystal catches ambient light, while the faceted lower bowl and slender column-cut stem provide period detailing. The design reflects late eighteenth-century domestic medicine vessels, making it a suitable addition to historical glassware collections or specialized tabletop displays.

A tincture glass is a specialized form of small Georgian stemware produced during the late 18th century, designed primarily for holding measured doses of medicinal tinctures, elixirs, or spirits.

Georgian glassware was hand-blown using lead crystal, noted for its weight and refractive clarity. Stems were drawn or joined manually, and bases feature characteristic conical feet with pontil scars.

Authentic pieces display subtle hand-blown irregularities, minor air inclusions, a pontil mark on the underside of the base, and soft surface wear consistent with age around the rim and foot rim.

Display the item inside a glass cabinet, on an open bookshelf, or upon a sideboard where backlighting highlights the clarity and hand-cut detailing of the vessel.

Wash stemware gently by hand in warm water using a mild dishwashing soap, avoiding hot water temperatures, dishwashers, and abrasive cleaning materials to protect the glass.
