This clear lead crystal ale glass dates from the 18th century Georgian period. It has an extended ogee-shaped bowl, a double series opaque twist stem containing white enamel cords around a central gauze, and a conical foot with a rough pontil mark. The bowl carries an engraving of a hop flower and crossed barley ears. Age-related wear is visible on the foot rim, and dealer stickers adhere to the underside. Measuring 18.5 cm high, 7.5 cm wide, and 5.4 cm deep, this piece suits display on a sideboard top in an English country house setting. Collectors of antique glassware can place it in a cabinet or use it as a decorative tabletop accessory.

Georgian opaque twist glassware, prominent from approximately 1755 to 1780, is defined by stems containing embedded white enamel rods or cane spirals. Glassmakers created these patterns by manipulating hot lead crystal containing white glass filaments before drawing and twisting the stem.

A double series opaque twist stem contains two distinct spiral components: an inner core surrounded by an outer spiral network. Glassmakers positioned white enamel rods into a mould, gathered clear lead glass over them, and pulled and rotated the molten gather to produce the intricate layered pattern.

Authentic Georgian glasses typically feature lead crystal with a distinct weight and greyish hue, irregular hand-blown proportions, and a pontil mark or smoothed pontil scar beneath a conical foot. Engravings from the era show fine, light wheel-cut details such as botanicals or heraldic emblems.

Antique stemware can be displayed in illuminated glazed cabinets, arranged along a sideboard top, or grouped on a decorative tray in a dining room. Their delicate silhouetted stems provide historical interest when juxtaposed with clean modern lines.

Antique glassware should be washed individually by hand in lukewarm water using mild dish soap. Sudden temperature changes must be avoided to prevent thermal shock, and pieces should be dried with a soft lint-free cloth rather than placed in a dishwasher.
