Description

Georgian wine glass. Double series opaque twist wine glass. The ogee bowl engraved chrysanthemum and the reverse with bird in flight and plain conical foot English c1765.

Rim dia: 4.7 cm.

Base dia: 6.8 cm.

Weight: 128 grams.

Condition: Very good.

FAQs

An opaque twist wine glass is a type of British stemware produced predominantly between 1755 and 1780 during the Georgian era. It features opaque white enamel threads layered inside the clear glass stem, created using specialized cane-working techniques.

Craftsmen placed white enamel rods into cylindrical moulds, poured molten lead crystal around them, and drew out and twisted the glass core while hot. This formed an internal spiral column before the bowl and foot were attached.

Authentic pieces usually display a rough pontil mark or a smoothed pontil scar beneath a conical or folded foot. Additionally, lead crystal from this period often exhibits minor inclusions, greyish or grey-green tinting under specific lighting, and wear patterns on the underside of the base.

Single historic glasses or curated groupings can be displayed inside lit glass cabinets, on polished wooden sideboards, or on floating shelves to highlight the optical details of the twisted stem and surface engraving.

Clean antique glass gently by hand using lukewarm water and mild dish detergent. Avoid dishwashers and extreme temperature fluctuations to prevent thermal shock, and dry with a soft lint-free microfibre cloth.
