Georgian wine glass.. The ovoid bowl with moulded basal flutes above a multi spiral opaque twist stem with centre knop and plain conical foot English c1765.

Rim dia: 4.9 cm.

Foot dia: 6.9 cm.

Weight: 154 grams.

Condition: Very good.

Note: A good quality well made glass.

Georgian opaque twist wine glasses were produced in England predominantly between 1755 and 1780. They were developed following the Glass Excise Act of 1745, which taxed glass by weight, prompting glassmakers to create visually detailed stems using embedded white enamel threads rather than solid, heavy glass.

These glasses were crafted from heavy lead crystal glass (also known as flint glass) combined with opaque white enamel rods. The enamel rods were arranged inside a mould, filled with molten clear glass, drawn out, and twisted by hand to create continuous internal spiral patterns.

Authentic period examples exhibit a soft greyish-blue or dark cast characteristic of 18th-century lead glass. They often feature a snap-off pontil mark or smoothed base mark on the foot, minor air bubbles, slight asymmetries from hand-drawing, and uniform surface wear along the rim of the conical foot.

Display period stemware inside a illuminated glass-front cabinet or arrange small groupings on a dining room sideboard to highlight the detailed stemwork. Grouping glasses of varying stem heights and bowl shapes creates a cohesive historical display within modern spaces.

Wash by hand individually in tepid water using mild liquid soap and a soft cloth, avoiding mechanical dishwashers entirely. Do not expose antique glass to sudden temperature changes, and dry immediately with a lint-free microfibre towel to prevent water spots.
