Description

A large and very impressive antique Edwardian inlaid mahogany cheval mirror. This was made in England, it dates from around 1900-1910.

It is a great size and is of superb quality. The mahogany frame has beautiful inlaid satin wood banding around the edges. There are very well made acorn finials and very impressive, finely detailed brass circular handles which adjust the tension. The base is pierced with lovely lattice work, the splayed legs terminate in brass hairy paw casters. The mirror can be tilted to various angles and removed completely for ease of transport.

The actual mirror glass is original & bevelled. There is a little bit of spotting in places, which we have highlighted in the images. This only adds to the character.

We have had this recently re-polished, it is in excellent condition for its age.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Edwardian furniture, produced during the reign of King Edward VII, often drew inspiration from earlier Georgian and Sheraton revivals, favouring lighter proportions, subtle string inlay, and refined craftsmanship compared to heavy Victorian pieces.

Cabinetmakers predominantly used solid mahogany, satinwood, and pine, often incorporating contrasting boxwood stringing, marquetry details, and brass or cast-iron pivoting hardware for the swing frame.

Authentication involves examining the timber grain, secondary wood species on the back panels, hand-cut screw threads, original bevelled mercury or silver-backed glass with subtle oxidisation, and traditional mortise and tenon joinery.

Positioning the piece against a neutral wall allows the warm wood tones and delicate inlay to function as a focal point, contrasting effectively with minimalist modern furnishings and textiles.

Dust the timber regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and treat periodically with traditional beeswax to nourish the finish. Avoid spraying liquid cleaner directly onto the mirror plate to prevent moisture seepage behind the silvering.
