This 19th-century French Louis XV revival display cabinet is constructed from warm brown mahogany with a marble top, brass inlay, and gilded brass ormolu mounts. The tall glass-fronted cabinet stands on slender cabriole legs and features a serpentine top above a glazed door and sides, revealing glass shelves, gold-toned lining, and a timber back. The lower section includes a hand-painted Vernis Martin panel depicting a courting couple in a woodland setting, accented with ornate gilt bronze mounts around the borders, corners, and apron. The dimensions are 163 cm high by 76 cm wide by 36 cm deep. Suitable for a living room, dining room, or hallway, this cabinet provides elegant display space for collectibles, porcelain, or glassware. The glass panels on the front and sides allow light to enter from multiple angles to illuminate interior items, while the enclosed lower cupboard keeps delicate items or additional belongings stored out of sight. The narrow footprint permits placement against a wall in smaller spaces while adding a decorative focal point with French chateau design characteristics.

Vernis Martin refers to a shellac-based lacquer technique developed in eighteenth-century France by the Martin brothers. It was created to imitate Asian lacquerwork and is commonly applied to curved wooden furniture surfaces featuring painted romantic or pastoral scenes.

Traditional French vitrines are typically constructed from dense hardwoods such as mahogany or kingwood, complemented by cast gilt bronze mounts, bevelled glass panels, and shaped marble tops.

Authentic pieces exhibit chased gilt bronze mounts, functional cast lock mechanisms, hand-painted artwork signed by the artist, and solid timber construction with joinery typical of French cabinetmaking.

Place the cabinet against a neutral or dark backdrop in a drawing room or hallway to serve as a focal point, utilising the glass shelving to display curated glass, ceramics, or collectibles.

Dust lacquered panels gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth without liquid polish. Keep the timber away from direct sunlight and central heating sources to prevent cracking, colour fading, or lacquer deterioration.
