Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This small Scandinavian painted box from the 19th century exemplifies traditional folk art style. Constructed from pine, it displays a rich dark red painted finish complemented by black borders, hand-painted rosemaling floral motifs, and a working key. Additional visible details include a domed lid, a top brass handle, and decorative brass stud detailing along the edges and vertical central plate. The visible wear on the painted surfaces highlights its authentic age and rustic character. Measuring 19 cm high, 28.5 cm wide, and 22 cm deep, this compact casket serves as a practical decorative accent for a sideboard top in a rustic farmhouse interior today. The sturdy rectangular structure provides functional storage for small keepsakes while adding an authentic historic touch to a room. Its traditional craftsmanship and distinctive painted ornamentation fit seamlessly into farmhouse-inspired living spaces or studies as a charming display piece. The combination of brass hardware and hand-painted botanical designs creates a visually engaging antique accessory ready for contemporary domestic use.

FAQs

Scandinavian painted boxes originated as rural household containers, often created as bride boxes or dowry caskets during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Regional decorative styles developed across Sweden, Norway, and Denmark, characterized by colourful floral brushwork such as rosemaling and kurbits.

These boxes were predominantly crafted from local softwoods such as pine or fir, using dovetail or nailed joinery. Metal elements, including forged iron hinges, keyhole escutcheons, and brass studs, were applied for structural support and ornamentation.

Authentic pieces feature hand-applied mineral pigments that show natural surface wear, craquelure, and oxidisation over time. Construction details typically include hand-cut joinery, forged hardware, and regional decorative patterns unique to specific Scandinavian valleys or provinces.

A painted box serves as an accent piece on modern sideboards, bookshelves, or bedside tables, providing contrasting texture against contemporary surfaces. It functions as both a decorative focal point and concealed storage for small everyday items.

Maintain painted surfaces by dusting regularly with a dry, soft microfibre cloth without liquid cleaners or solvents. Keep the object away from direct sunlight, radiators, and high humidity to prevent pigment fading, paint flaking, or wood movement.
