Description

A fantastic pair of antique Biedermeier mahogany side chairs. They were made in continental Europe, possibly Denmark, or somewhere close and they are quite early, dating from around the 1790-1820 period, or even earlier.

The quality is outstanding, they have gorgeous and intricate carving depicting eagles heads on the backs, the legs are also beautifully carved.

We have had them re-polished and re-upholstered in a cream cotton fabric, retaining the original horse hair stuffing. The condition is excellent for their age.

Please check & enlarge all the images, especially the stunning carved eagles heads, which in themselves are a work of art, plus the reeding & other carved details.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Biedermeier is a central European style from the period between 1815 and 1848, characterised by utilitarian comfort, clean lines, and a focus on the natural grain of domestic woods rather than excessive ornamentation.

These chairs are typically constructed from native European hardwoods such as birch, ash, and cherry, or imported mahogany, featuring hand-carved details, French polish finishes, and traditional joinery methods.

Authenticity is identified through period-appropriate joinery, hand-turned or carved wooden elements, natural timber shrinkage, and traditional upholstery foundations like horsehair rather than modern synthetic foams.

They can be used as accent seating in a living room or paired with a contemporary dining table to create a sophisticated contrast between historical craftsmanship and modern minimalism.

Maintain antique wooden pieces by keeping them away from direct sunlight and heat sources, dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth, and occasionally applying pure beeswax to nourish the wood finish.
