This 18th-century Sheraton period stationery box originates from a West Indian satinwood knife and fork box conversion dating around 1790. The piece displays a warm golden brown colour throughout its figured timber construction, complemented by contrasting marquetry stringing along the fluted facade. The serpentine front features vertical reeding, linear inlay accents, and a central silver escutcheon surrounding the keyhole. Inside the upright lid sits an inset silver football-shaped mount above a scalloped decorative border. The open interior contains tiered letter slots made of matching wood, designed to hold correspondence in an orderly fashion. Measuring 38 cm high, 22.8 cm wide, and 27.9 cm deep, the box fits neatly onto an office desk or library table. Today, it serves as a practical desktop accessory for sorting mail and paper documents in a study or home office.

Originating in late 18th-century England, these boxes feature lightweight neoclassical proportions and detailed marquetry popularised by cabinetmaker Thomas Sheraton, often crafted from figure-rich woods like satinwood.

Authentic examples incorporate West Indian satinwood veneers, ebony or tulipwood stringing, pine or oak secondary cores, and sterling silver keyhole escutcheons or silver mounts.

Look for hand-cut dovetail joints, authentic iron or brass drop hinges, natural shrinkage lines along veneer seams, and period-correct silver hallmarks or escutcheons.

Position the piece on an executive desk, sideboard, or bookshelf top as a functional organiser for correspondence or an accent alongside modern ceramics.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth, apply natural beeswax polish annually, and place the box away from direct sunlight and fluctuating humidity to prevent veneer lifting.
