This 19th-century French Rococo Revival wall clock is in the Boulle style, measuring 45 cm high. The black and gold case displays red Boulle and mother-of-pearl inlay with floral scrolling, complemented by elaborate ormolu mounts and an ornate gilt-bronze top finial. A round 4.5" ormolu dial sits centrally, showing individual enamel cartouches with blue Roman numerals, an enamel center signed Hen Marc of Paris with blue decoration, and matching blued steel hands. Visible details include dual winding holes positioned above the six o'clock position, a Brocot regulation aperture above the twelve o'clock position, and detailed brass and tortoiseshell marquetry. Placement suits prominent wall locations above a sideboard or console table in a living room, hallway or study. The timepiece functions with a standard French 8-day movement striking the hours and half hours on a bell, regulated via a count-wheel mechanism.

A Boulle clock is a timekeeper decorated with a specialised marquetry technique developed by Andre-Charles Boulle in 17th-century France. This style combines cut brass, mother-of-pearl, or pewter inlay with tortoiseshell or ebonised grounds, framed by ornate gilt-bronze mounts.

Traditional Boulle construction utilises brass and mother-of-pearl pattern work laid over tortoiseshell or dark ebonised wood. The cases are dressed with cast gilt-bronze or ormolu mounts, while dials often feature individual enamelled cartouches set into a chased brass face plate.

Authentic 19th-century examples display intricate brass and tortoiseshell marquetry with hand-chased gilt-bronze fittings showing natural age wear. Makers marks, such as stamps on the movement plate from Parisian clockmakers like Henri Marc, further verify origin and era.

Position the clock as a focal point above a minimalist console table, sideboard, or fireplace mantel. The contrast between dark tortoiseshell, gilded metalwork, and clean modern wall finishes creates a balanced focal point in transitional or eclectic spaces.

Keep the clock away from direct sunlight, central heating, and humidity changes, which cause brass inlay to lift from the tortoiseshell ground. Dust gently with a soft dry microfibre cloth, avoiding metal polishes or liquid cleaners that could compromise delicate adhesives.
