This large Edwardian wall mirror dates from around 1900 and exhibits a Victorian and Gothic design style. Constructed from dark brown oak and glass, the piece features a cushion profile where the outer frame is angled and carved with pierced acanthus leaf motifs, complemented by carved mouldings and applied corner spandrels on the inner frame. The central bevelled glass plate measures 61 cm by 81 cm and is set within an angled inner frame surrounded by four slim peripheral mirror plates. Minor tarnish and spotting are visible on the smaller surrounding plates, and the woodwork displays a polished wax finish. Measuring 134.5 cm high, 112 cm wide, and 12.5 cm deep, the mirror is designed to hang vertically on a wall. It is typically positioned above a mantel in a living room, hallway, or dining room to add depth and reflective light to the interior space.

A cushion frame mirror features a raised or angled central moulding, often surrounded by secondary bevelled mirror plates or detailed relief carving that steps outwards from the central mirror glass.

Mirrors from the late Victorian and Edwardian eras were predominantly constructed from solid hardwoods such as oak or mahogany, paired with thick silvered plate glass featuring hand-bevelled edges.

Authentic pieces display deep relief hand-carving with slight natural irregularities, original silvering on the bevelled glass showing light oxidisation, and period-appropriate wooden backboards.

Position the mirror above a mantelpiece or entry console table to serve as a focal point, contrasting the rich, dark timber against contemporary neutral walls.

Dust the detailed carvings using a soft dry brush, nourish the timber periodically with natural beeswax, and clean the glass using a lightly dampened cloth without allowing liquid to seep into the frame.
