This Victorian tea caddy dates from 1860 and is fashioned from dark brown coromandel wood ornamented with polished gold-coloured brass mounts. The piece takes a rectangular form with a curved, domed lid, detailed with pierced strapwork and decorative corner plates fixed with studs. A prominent pierced brass keyhole escutcheon sits centrally on the front elevation, complemented by matching decorative corner brackets. The interior holds two sections for tea, accessed via the hinged lid, and comes with a working key. Measuring 15 cm high, 23 cm wide and 14 cm deep, the caddy is proportioned for placement on a sideboard top or display surface in a reception room or study. It provides a decorative container for storage while serving as a period accent piece in a traditional interior.

A tea caddy is a lockable container designed to store dry tea leaves, highly popular in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries when tea was an expensive imported commodity.

Victorian cabinetmakers frequently utilised exotic hardwoods such as coromandel, mahogany, and rosewood, often adorned with pierced brass mounts, strapwork, and foil or velvet linings.

Authentic pieces usually feature hand-cut dovetail joinery, period-correct lock mechanisms, natural surface oxidisation on brass fittings, and characteristic wear patterns along the base.

Place the caddy on a sideboard, console table, or bookshelf to serve as a focal point or function as a storage solution for small desk accessories and keepsakes.

Clean wooden surfaces using a microfibre cloth and beeswax polish, taking care to avoid harsh chemical cleaners on brass mounts to retain historic patina.
