Georgian 24cm Mahogany Inlaid Jewel Box C 1830

18th century
Sold 12 December 2025 · Robert Bush Antiques
This “Georgian 24cm Mahogany Inlaid Jewel Box C 1830” found a buyer.

It was listed by Robert Bush Antiques. Sold pieces stay on Sellingantiques as a record of what has passed through, and the next one is rarely far away.

Description

Georgian mahogany jewel box with beautiful herringbone inlaid adging and a large fan inlaid in the centre of the top.

The mahogany is very attractive, a beautiful colour, and the grain of the wood is outstanding.

It comes complete with working key and it is lined in a pale blue velvet and is absolutely ready to use.

It would work as a jewel box or simply as storage for anything on a desk or dressing table.

We have simply cleaned it and given it a polish.

The only minor fault is there is a small mark to the top just to right of the inlay, maybe something was spilled on it at some time. We thought about polishing it out but chose not to, so it is absolutely honest and untouched.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Georgian boxes from the 18th and early 19th centuries are characterised by classical proportions, symmetrical designs, and fine timber veneers such as mahogany, often accented with delicate stringing and marquetry.

These pieces typically feature solid secondary timbers with fine tropical hardwood veneers, hand-cut dovetail joints, brass escutcheons, and intricate bone or lightwood inlay work.

Authenticity is indicated by period-correct hand-cut joinery, natural age-related patination, old secondary wood linings, and traditional hand-applied finishes like shellac or wax.

Place the box on a console table, dressing chest, or desk surface to add textural warmth, historical contrast, and functional storage to modern living spaces.

Keep the wood away from direct sunlight and extreme humidity fluctuations, cleaning only with a soft dry cloth and occasionally applying a quality microcrystalline wax to protect the surface.
