Description

Regency rosewood sewing box with patterned mother of pearl inlay. The inlay and the rosewood are all in immaculate order.

It is 30 cm wide, so a good size, and inside the lid you find a quilted silk section which drops forward in a concertina fashion. This is edged with a gilded leather strip.

The tray is fitted with various sections for needles and pins , and this lifts out to reveal line storage space.

This is a beautiful box in excellent order, and the only fault I can find is that the button from the tiny lid front left of the tray is missing.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Regency style boxes, produced during the early 19th century in Britain, typically feature classical proportions, exotic veneers like rosewood or mahogany, and contrasting brass or mother-of-pearl inlay reflecting neoclassical influences.

These boxes were predominantly crafted from dense hardwoods such as rosewood, mahogany, or calamander, and frequently embellished with intricate mother-of-pearl, brass stringing, and velvet or silk interior linings.

Authentic pieces exhibit period construction techniques such as hand-cut dovetail joints, old secondary timbers like pine or cedar, patinated brass escutcheons, and genuine hand-engraved mother-of-pearl work rather than modern synthetic substitutes.

Such decorative boxes function effectively as surface styling elements on sideboards, coffee tables, or desks, serving as both functional storage and tactile focal points that introduce historical texture to contemporary spaces.

Preserve the wood and inlay by keeping the item away from direct sunlight and extreme humidity fluctuations, applying microcrystalline wax sparingly, and avoiding harsh liquid chemical cleaners on the delicate surfaces.
