This nineteenth-century French Henri II night table or side cupboard is formed from dark brown walnut with a thick, mottled dark pink and red marble top. The structure stands on turned legs connected by an H-stretcher with central turning, complemented by rosette carved panels flanking the upper drawer, a central fleur-de-lis carving on the panelled cupboard door, and small round wooden knobs. The piece measures 94 cm high, 43 cm wide, and 43 cm deep. FAQs

Originating in late 19th-century France during the Renaissance Revival period, Henri II style bedside tables were designed as functional bedroom furniture. Typically featuring turned columns, relief carvings, and marble tops, these cabinets housed night-time necessities prior to indoor plumbing.

These pieces were predominantly crafted from solid French walnut, oak, or fruitwood. Tops were fitted with slabs of local marble, such as Rouge Royale or Grand Antique, while drawers were constructed with hand-cut dovetail joinery.

Authentic examples demonstrate hand-carved decorative motifs, natural wear along the drawer runners, and hand-forged hardware. The marble top should show subtle surface age, and structural joints feature traditional mortise and tenon construction.

Incorporating a carved French cupboard alongside modern upholstered furniture creates a balanced, eclectic aesthetic. The piece functions effectively as an accent side table beside a sofa or as a plant stand in a hallway.

Dust wood surfaces regularly with a dry cloth and apply clear beeswax annually to protect the finish. Marble tops should be cleaned using a pH-neutral solution and immediately dried to prevent dulling or staining from liquid spills.
