FAQs

Samuel Raven was a noted Birmingham artist active in the early 19th century, renowned for his exquisite painted papier-mache boxes that often depicted tavern scenes, portraits, and copies of master paintings.

These items were crafted using layers of paper pulp mixed with glue and resin, pressed into moulds, dried, and finished with multiple coats of dark lacquer before being hand-painted and varnished.

Authenticity is determined by examining the fine craquelure in the varnish, the quality of the miniature hand-painting, signature marks if present, and the tactile weight and construction of the compressed paper core.

These small-scale objects can be displayed inside glass-topped coffee table displays, curated on a gentlemans library desk, or arranged alongside other vintage curiosities on a bookshelf.

Keep papier-mache items out of direct sunlight to prevent varnish degradation and fading, and clean only with a dry, soft microfibre cloth while avoiding moisture and chemical cleaning agents.
