FAQs

Mid-19th-century French decorative boxes often feature rich tropical hardwoods accented with intricate marquetry and mother-of-pearl inlay, reflecting the opulent tastes of the Second Empire era.

These pieces were typically constructed from a secondary softwood or mahogany carcass, veneered with exotic woods like rosewood or burr walnut, and embellished with shell, brass stringing, and metal hardware.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints, old paper or silk linings, hand-forged or cast iron locks with working keys, and natural ageing of the wood and inlay materials.

It can be placed on a dressing table, bookshelf, or coffee table as a functional storage piece that adds historical texture and refined warmth to modern spaces.

Keep the box out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources to prevent wood splitting and veneer shrinkage, applying occasional microcrystalline wax to nourish the polished surface.
