Victorian furniture design spans the reign of Queen Victoria (1837-1901), encompassing various revivals such as Gothic, Elizabethan, and Rococo, typically characterised by sturdy construction, rich timber tones, and ornate decorative carving.

These chairs were predominantly crafted from dense hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, and oak, frequently featuring hand-turned components, mortise and tenon joints, and traditional horsehair or webbing upholstery.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-appropriate joinery techniques, signs of age-related patination and oxidisation on the timber, hand-cut screws or handmade fixings, and wear patterns consistent with nineteenth-century use.

Pairing these historic armchairs with a minimalist contemporary dining table creates a striking juxtaposition of eras, adding architectural weight and historical character to a modern space.

Maintain the timber by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent warping or splitting, applying occasional natural beeswax polish, and protecting upholstered sections from moisture and abrasion.
