This Georgian oak grandfather longcase clock dates from the late 18th to early 19th century and exhibits a dark brown finish. The case stands 203 cm high, 51 cm wide, and 26 cm deep, making it an attractively small size suited for placement in a hallways, living room, or study in an English country house. The hood incorporates a swan-neck pediment and turned quarter columns with brass capitals. Below, the trunk has an arched wooden door fitted with a key and a pale blue tag with a tassel, flanked by fluted quarter columns. The base rests on shaped bracket feet. The cream-coloured hand-painted dial features Roman numerals, delicate floral decoration surrounding an anchor and shield motif in the arch and four corners, and the signature for William Ingram of Gardenston. Inside the case, an eight-day movement operates the timepiece. The timber displays natural grain variations, dark patination, and minor surface wear consistent with age. Glass protects the painted iron dial face. In a modern home, this horological piece functions as a practical timekeeper and a focal point for a traditional interior, occupying a modest floor footprint while adding period character to a room.

Georgian longcase clocks, commonly known as grandfather clocks, originated in the 18th century and feature tall wooden cases housing a pendulum and weight-driven movement, often topped with decorative pediments such as swan-neck arches.

Craftsmen typically constructed the cases using solid native timbers such as oak, mahogany, or walnut, paired with painted iron or brass dials, glass aperture panels, and cast iron weights.

Authentic pieces display hand-cut dovetail joinery on the case, hand-painted or engraved dials with Roman numerals, original keyholes, and natural age-related timber shrinkage or patina.

Positioning a slender tallcase clock in an entrance hallway, stair landing, or dining space creates a historical focal point that complements both traditional schemes and contemporary neutral palettes.

Keep the timber case away from direct heat sources and damp draughts, dust regularly with a soft dry cloth, apply natural beeswax sparingly, and have the mechanical movement serviced by a horologist.
